Announcement – Historic Ordination Feb. 16, 2013

Monday, February 11th, 2013

Dear Friend,

I am pleased to invite you to join the leaders of our church as we celebrate the ordination of Ministers Julia Presley, Errol Cooper, Deborah Stapleton and Sharon Chamberlyne on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. These four individuals have all completed their academic studies at fine accredited theological schools and have been serving in significant ministry at First Baptist for a number of years. We are so proud of their accomplishments and honored to have them working on our ministry team.

Please join us in this grand celebration as we continue the almost two thousand year tradition of ecclesiastical recognition and congregational blessing. We should all be excited about the call to ministry in the lives of four outstanding clergy whose lives are committed to serving the church and community in the name of Jesus and with the power of the Holy Spirit. We have all been blessed in some way by the these ministers and now I am asking us to bless them by being present at this very important occasion on their lives.

Thank you for the support you give to our church and thank you in advance for your support for this historic moment in the life of our church.

Sincerely,

DeForest B. Soaries, Jr.

Senior Pastor

Financial Freedom Friday (dfree tip of the week 01/25/13)

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Dear Friend,

Over the years, I’ve learned that living dfree necessitates a complete change in the way we live, and changing the way we live necessitates a complete change in the way we think. We think we must have that new pair of shoes, or that very nice suit, or that brand new car, even if it means using high interest credit cards and loans to get them. Borrowing has become a lifestyle and Americans are drowning in debt. This is fact: you cannot be financially free, until you get out of debt.

Recently, I told the story of my dear friend, a highly educated, prominent, financially secure minister, and owner of the oldest Mercedes that I’ve ever seen! He drove his old car with pride and contentment; knowing that for years, he had not had a car note. The idea that we must have certain things, the latest and greatest, suggests that we cannot be content without them. The apostle Paul teaches that God gives strength to be content in all circumstances. The ability to do that is a sure sign of spiritual maturity. For Paul, and my friend with the beat-up Mercedes, contentment came as a result of their relationship with Christ. If we have that same relationship, we can be content and resist the thought that we need things to make us happy.

This weekend, in acknowledgement of the correlation between faith and finances, read and study Philippians 4:11-13, and pray for contentment in all circumstances.

God bless,

DeForest B. Soaries, Jr.

Thanksgiving Thoughts

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Dear Friend,

The last few weeks have been difficult ones. We’ve struggled through one of the most damaging hurricanes in East Coast history. We’ve lost food, and lived in homes that were dark, cold, uncomfortable, and in some cases; damaged. We were unable to find gas, which kept us from going to work, and some of us lost pay. But thank God, through it all, we’ve had joy, and the joy of the Lord has been our strength.

Last Sunday, I reminded you that the presence of God’s Power (the Holy Spirit) in our lives provides the undercurrent that pulls us to a place of joy. The Holy Spirit helps us find Satisfaction, Strength, and Security in the midst of storm. Although the storm put us in a dark, cold place; we knew that joy would come in the morning. We find joy in the presence of God (Psalms 16), and for that and so much more, we’re thankful.

Please join me, onsite or online, as we come together for a joyful celebration of Praise, Worship and Thanksgiving with Pastor Gerald Thomas and the congregation of Shiloh Baptist Church at First Baptist Church on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Please invite your friends and family to join us.

Have a blessed holiday.

Sincerely,

DeForest B. Soaries, Jr.
