Position Summary:

First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens (FBCLG) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Buildings and Grounds Associate to maintain the church’s facilities and outdoor areas, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all members, staff, and visitors. This role encompasses general maintenance, custodial duties, landscaping, event setup, and compliance with safety regulations. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in building maintenance, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to the church’s mission and values.

Overall, Role Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs of church buildings and facilities.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and upkeep of all church grounds, including landscaping, lawn care, snow removal, and trash disposal.
  • Provide support for church events by setting up and breaking down furniture, equipment, and audio-visual components.
  • Set up and break down for funerals, memorials, repasts, and related services as needed.
  • Oversee the organization and proper storage of church materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assist with custodial duties, including cleaning, restocking supplies, and maintaining hygiene standards.
  • Monitor and maintain the HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems, coordinating with contractors as needed.
  • Maintain security by ensuring doors, windows, and access points are secured and functioning properly.
  • Assist in managing maintenance and remodeling projects to ensure completion within budget and schedule.
  • Support emergency preparedness, including assisting with safety drills and ensuring emergency systems are operational.
  • Oversee general building repairs, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, painting, and masonry from contractors.
  • Work closely with the Facilities Manager, security team, and church leadership to support facility operations.

Monitor daily activities of the church which includes:

  • Responsible for opening and closing facility, arming/disarming of security alarm
  • Manage climate control system and adjustments as appropriate
  • Respond to facilities inquiries from guests and members
  • Manage all deliveries to/from facility

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
  • May involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and other environmental factors.
  • Position requires the ability to respond to emergencies and urgent facility needs.
  • Must have knowledge of OSHA guidelines and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in building maintenance, custodial work, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building systems.
  • Proficiency with maintenance tools, landscaping equipment, and custodial supplies.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs., stand for extended periods, and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid NJ Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification is a plus.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in building maintenance or a related field.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general building systems.
  • Proficiency with maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Must have valid NJ Driver’s License in good standing
  • Must be available to work on call, evenings and weekends as needed.

Physical Demands:

The church custodian must able to lift and move heavy objects (up to 75lbs), stand for extended periods of time, and perform repetitive motions. The position may require bending, stooping and reaching.

Working Conditions:

Work schedule will include prioritizing demands, deadlines and managing emergencies. The church custodian will work primarily indoors but may be required to work outdoors for events and activities. The position may require working in areas with cleaning chemicals and other hazardous materials.
